On October 1, 1972 more than fifty members including the preacher, Mac Layton, left at the close of morning worship because of disagreement with some of the elders.

Mac Layton was born on February 7. 1931. After leaving The Village congregation, he served for 22 years as minister for the North MacArthur Church of Christ in Oklahoma City that was established with 111 members on February 11, 1973 as a result of the split. After 50 years of preaching the gospel, he passed away on February 7th, 2002. His book, "How to build a great church," is best known among the eight books that he published.
